Fractions, decimals and the evaluation of educational interventions

Fractions and decimals are crucial for later mathematics achievement and for success in many occupations.

Unfortunately, these topics pose substantial difficulties for many children and adults. Given this, it is important to understand how people process this type of learning to develop interventions that will help them learn maths more effectively.

It is also important to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions. In education, interventions are often evaluated via randomized controlled trials. These trials are rigorous, but they are also expensive, and their conclusions are often uninformative. Thus, it is important to find ways interventions could be evaluated more efficiently.
