Norma Ann Christie Scholarship in Low Temperature Plasma Physics

We are very happy to acknowledge the generous donation from the Christie family. This donation funds a 3 year PhD scholarship open to UK and EU students providing a great opportunity for a talented young researcher. The most recent donation is helping support a PhD student working on plasma propulsion.

I was so impressed and inspired by the phenomenal research taking place that I left knowing that I had to support in some way. Providing financial support towards PhD scholars within this wonderful area gives me a real sense of pride, knowing that I play a small part in enabling this work to progress further. Studentships

Studentship: To be considered, select a project from the list available and submit an application through the University of York online system .

Eligibility: UK and EU students only.

Entry requirements: Students with, or expecting to gain, at least an upper second class honours degree, or equivalent, are invited to apply.

Closing date: Dependent on the project

Shortlisting: Shortlisting will take place as soon as possible after the closing date and successful applicants will be notified promptly.

Interviews: Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview to take place at the University of York. Video interviews can be arranged for EU applicants who live outside of the UK. Candidates will be asked to give a 10 minute presentation prior their interview.

How to Apply

To apply for admission as a student on our research programmes you will need to provide : a fully completed application form, a CV, an official academic transcript (or interim document if you have not yet received your reward) and the contact details of two academic referees.  Once we have your application form, one reference, your CV and transcripts we can forward your details to an academic for consideration.

On your application form please include information on the research projects, or areas in which you are interested.  Most members of academic staff have profiles listed in the York Research Database with information on their research interests and external activities.  We encourage you to do some ‘research’ on our academics to find out who would be most suitable to supervise your PhD. Please try to include the name of your preferred supervisor on your application.

Entry requirements: English Language

For applicants whose native language is not English the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology's minimum English language requirements is aligned with the University's minimum English language standards. These are: 

  • IELTS: 6.0 (in the 'Academic' test): Listening – 5.5, Reading – 5.5, Speaking – 5.5 and Writing – 5.5
  • Pearson: 55 (PTE Academic): Listening – 51, Reading – 51, Speaking – 51 and Writing – 51
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): C
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): A
  • GSCE/IGCSE in English Language: C
