Another double success for the department at this year’s awards for excellence in teaching

We are delighted that the Department of Language and Linguistic Science has been successful in receiving two prestigious Vice Chancellor's Teaching Awards in the latest round. This is the second double award in a row for our department as a follow up from the LLS success in the 2019 Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Awards.

This year, both Dr Angela O'Flaherty (Lecturer in French), and Dr Julia Kolkmann (Lecturer in Linguistics) were recognized for their excellence in teaching.

The awards go to those who demonstrate:

  • sustained excellence across a range of teaching and support activities
  • creative approach to teaching and/or learning support, focused on student learning needs
  • evidence of an impact on colleagues as well as students

Dr Angela O'Flaherty joined the department in 2012 and has since taught French modules on a wide range of topics including the French speaking world, French cinema and contemporary French memory and politics. She also teaches French on the Languages for all programme. Her award recognised her infectious enthusiasm for teaching, her attention to students’ needs, her outstanding feedback from students as well as her entrepreneurial approach to Language Outreach.

Dr Julia Kolkmann joined the department in 2015 and has since taught on a broad range of modules in pragmatics, semantics, interaction and English language. Her award recognised her commitment to and aptitude for teaching, resulting in sustained excellent student feedback, as well as her contribution to embedding employability in the curriculum.

The awards will be presented at the summer graduation ceremonies in order to recognise outstanding teaching and learning support before their colleagues, students, and the students' families.
