Department Community Coordinators (DCCs)

The Department Community Coordinator (DCC) project aims to build academic and departmental communities that create a sense of belonging and are open to and inclusive of all students at York. We know how important it is for students to feel connected to others on their course, and to get to know students in their year group and who are studying the same modules.

This next phase of the project aims to focus on student-led induction and co-constructing activities to assist with successful inductions for incoming students at York.

Department Community Coordinators role

We will be recruiting a network of Departmental Community Coordinators (DCCs) to develop student-led induction activities and other departmental community building initiatives in academic departments. The DCC roles we are currently recruiting for will be open to returning UG students to apply for. Successful candidates will work from September 2022 for 12 weeks. These are paid roles for students, and there will be one UG DCC per department. The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Monday 11 July. If you have any questions about the role please contact: sas-deptcommunitycoordinators@york.ac.uk.

We are looking for students to apply for the role of DCC and to help us to:

  • Develop a plan for student-led induction within your department, by liaising with department staff, student groups and reps.
  • Consider the needs of specific groups of students when developing your induction plan - eg international, mature, online learners etc.
  • Co-produce student-led induction activities, where possible, in partnership with academic reps, academic societies and students.
  • Promote existing initiatives, activities and events, and encourage students to attend these within their community networks.
  • Encourage students to take part in volunteering/social/extracurricular  opportunities within the department, SUs and community.
  • Produce student-led guidance and tips for students around engaging with community networks, the University and the City - eg walking tours, ‘rough guide’ to X etc.

More information about the role and how to apply is available in the DCC role outline for your department. Please click on the role outline for the department/ school you are studying in:
