If you are currently studying in years 1 or 2 students will select their preferred Philosophy option modules via an online app which will be made available to them between 10:00 hours on Monday 24 February until 16:00 hours on Monday 3 March 2025. Information about the app and how to use it will be sent out nearer the time and students should check their university email account regularly for any updates.
You are strongly advised to read through the guidance for your degree Programme well in advance of choosing modules - this will tell you which modules are compulsory and which are optional. You may also wish to talk through your options with your supervisor or other academic staff.
All students, including those with or without a Philosophy supervisor, will be invited to drop-in sessions with Jamie Buckland – Chair of Philosophy Board of Studies - to talk through any queries they may have. Sessions will take place on:
This is on our Philosophy web pages Module and programme information
If you are a student in Philosophy and another department, then you will choose only your Philosophy modules via the app. Your other department will have its own processes for choosing optional modules and you should refer to their information. Depending on which department you are a joint student in, each has it's own deadlines, and own system for making optional module choices.
If your year abroad is definite, the answer is ‘no’ and you will be contacted about choosing modules for 2026/27 around this time next year. If you have applied for study abroad/placement in 2025/26 and your place has not yet been confirmed, you should choose your option modules now as a backup in case your study abroad or placement application is not successful.
Firstly, you should check your degree programme rules below to see if electives, YIMs and LFA modules are permitted. If they are, please visit the Electives web pages for further information.
You can find information about the module, including the method of assessment, by selecting the module in the module catalogue.
You will be asked to rank modules in order of preference. An algorithm is run which is designed to allocate as many students as possible to their first and second choices. We cannot guarantee that everyone will get their preferred choices.
Please email philosophy@york.ac.uk
Yes, provided that there are places available and the modules fit with your programme and timetable, you will be able to change modules after the timetable has been confirmed. If a module is full, you can ask to be put on the waiting list for it.
Make sure you don’t miss the application window for choosing your optional modules! The app will allocate modules to students after the closure date. However, if students do not choose their modules before it closes, they will be allocated to modules with spaces left. Note that these may not be the modules you had hoped to take!
If you want to change a module after the timetable has been released to you, then there is only a small window of time in which you can do this. In both semester 1 and 2, the deadline is Friday of week 2. After this time you will not be permitted to change modules as too much teaching will have been missed. All module requests MUST be made via the module change request form. Requests will be considered in order of receipt and we cannot guarantee that we will be able to action every request.
