Serate Italiane Talk: Profondo Gotico

On Thursday 30th November 2023, the Department of Language and Linguistic Science will host a talk on Italian cinema presented by Dr Giulio L.Giusti, Senior Lecturer in Modern Languages & European Cinema (Sheffield Hallam University).

 

Talk: Profondo Gotico 
L’influenza del filone gotico italiano nel cinema giallo dei primi anni 70
Questa presentazione ha lo scopo di fornire una comprensione critica del cinema gotico e giallo in Italia nel periodo a cavallo fra gli anni Sessanta e i primi anni Settanta e di delineare le fasi storiche, le dinamiche produttive, nonché le principali affinità tematiche e stilistiche che hanno reso questi due filoni cinematografici così celebri in tutto il mondo. Particolare attenzione verrà inoltre riservata alle tre figure più rappresentative del periodo, vale a dire Riccardo Freda, Mario Bava e Dario Argento, e a come tali registi siano serviti a plasmare il genere gotico e giallo italiano tanto da renderlo uno dei marchi più iconici della cultura popolare globale

The event is part of ‘Serate italiane’ run by Cinzia Bacilieri (Dept. Language and Linguistic Science), a series of talks on Italian culture, language and society at the University of York, UK. Giulio is no stranger to our event series as he previously presented an in-depth analysis of Dario Argento’s iconic film Profondo Rosso in Dario Argento - The master of horror: film and talk and an introductory talk to the film screening in ITALIAMMARE - Italian Film Day.

General admission: Free

The talk and following Q&A session will be entirely in Italian. The event is aimed at those who are currently studying Italian (BA in Italian, YLE/ LfA Elementary to advanced levels), or people who want to practise their Italian language skills.
