Staff and students’ recent achievements

A stream of new fellowships and bursaries awarded to our researchers and students

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is delighted to announce the following staff and students’ recent achievements and fellowships:

Monika Schmid (Head of Department, Dept. Language and Linguistic Science) has recently been elected as a Fellow of the British Academy.

Giuseppe Longobardi has been elected as a Member of the Academia Europaea in the Linguistic Studies, ‘The human mind and its complexity’ section.

Peter French has been confirmed as an Emeritus Professor from October 2022. He has also been awarded an honorary doctorate by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Zurich (UZH) in recognition of his achievements in forensic phonetics and his considerable work in solving crimes based on acoustic and auditory analyses of the human voice.

Furthermore, we are delighted to announce the following students’ achievements:

Margherita Belia (Postgraduate research student, Dept. Language and Linguistic Science) has been awarded the title of Humanities Research Centre (HRC) Doctoral Fellow and a bursary for her research project ‘The effects of sleep and infants' vocal production experience in new word learning’. Margarita’s presentation ‘Does sleep help babies recognise new words in different voices?’ placed second in the HRC Doctoral Fellowship competition for her capacity to communicate her high-quality research clearly and engagingly to a non-specialist audience. 

Vicki Noble (Postgraduate research student, Dept. Language and Linguistic Science) has won the Linguistics Association of Great Britain (LAGB) bursary for the best student abstract (most highly rated by reviewers) for her paper "Exoskeletal Iceberg Semantics: evidence from singulative structures".
