Launch of LFA Ukrainian for Everyday Communication language course to help families and children affected by the war in Ukraine

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is delighted to announce the launch of a new short course in Ukrainian language ‘Ukrainian for Everyday Communication (Beginners)’ part of its Languages For All Programme.

This course is an introductory course that provides first-hand experience on the Ukrainian language and culture. It will be delivered by Dr. Maryna Kapas-Romaniuk, a Ukrainian refugee who holds a PhD in linguistics and is a specialist on teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language.

Ukrainian for Everyday Communication (Beginners)

The aims of the course are to:

  • Introduce students to Ukrainian pronunciation, grammar and spelling.
  • Develop learners’ confidence in engaging in everyday communication.
  • Provide the building blocks for understanding, using and developing basic structures
  • Equip learners with relevant language learning strategies to engage in basic conversations.

The course will be taught in 2-hour sessions over 8 weeks with a start date on the week commencing on 27th June 2022. There are two options to choose from, the first on campus via in person teaching delivered in a group of no more than 20 students, and the second, delivered online via Zoom.

  • Group 1: in person on campus, Tuesdays 4-6 pm
  • Group 2: online, Thursdays 6-8 pm

All course fees will be donated to the Unicef Ukraine appeal to help children and families affected by the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian for Everyday Communication (Beginners) is a demonstration of the distinctive University of York commitment to the local community under its ‘A University for Public Good’ strategic vision.

“Ensuring a warm welcome and caring environment for Ukrainian refugees in the UK is important, and nothing reaches out more to a person’s heart than being addressed in their own language, even if it is only a few words. This is why the Department of Language and Linguistic Science is offering a course in Ukrainian for everyday use. Even more important, however, is to support Ukrainians who are still caught in the war, and we are therefore donating 100% of the course fees to the Unicef Ukraine appeal.” - Prof. Monika S. Schmid (Head of Department, Dept. Language and Linguistic Science)
