A new CPD workshop series for Japanese language teachers

Posted on 18 November 2021

New Japanese language education project with international invited speakers

Megumi Bailey (Dept. Language and Linguistic Science) has been awarded a second grant from The Japan Foundation (London) to develop and deliver a new project entitled ‘Reflection of self in dialogue’ for Japanese teachers. This is a follow up from last year’s CPD workshop series ‘How can teachers in Japanese language education help learners to develop their communication competence?’.

The project ‘Reflection of self in dialogue’ is a full LLS Japanese Team endeavour with the participation of Dr Yumi Nixon as a co-organiser and co-facilitator alongside Megumi Bailey. It will also see Nayuta Brand (Japanese freelance teacher in Switzerland) participating as an external collaborator and Mayumi Yabe (Yokohama National University) as the project advisor.

As in the previous project, the organising team will be launching a series of CPD workshops aimed at those engaged in Japanese language education. These workshops will focus on experience-based learning by providing participants with opportunities to engage in dialogues and reflect on their dialogic process. They will include activities relating to interviews, writing and summarising verbatim accounts and interactive art appreciation through dialogue, which will be facilitated by invited speakers.

Previous participatory workshops entitled: ‘How can teachers in Japanese language education help learners to develop their communication competence?’ left the Japanese teaching community with an open question for reflecting on teaching practice: ‘What is dialogue?’. Aiming to nurture the communication competence of students, the new workshop series will encourage attendees to become aware of and reflect on a self-dialogic process and its significance not only in educational settings, but as individuals.

The aims of ‘Reflection of self in dialogue’ are:

  • to provide participants with opportunities to engage in dialogues through various activities including interviews, observation of artwork and other tasks to stimulate reflections on their dialogic process
  • to help participants to think about what dialogue involves and its importance in an individual’s life, education, and society in general through experiential learning
  • to introduce activities and concepts which enable participants to explore further their own learning and teaching.
  • to build a learning community that extends beyond this workshop series by providing participants with a ‘space’ to freely exchange their thoughts, ideas, and information

Three online CPD workshops are scheduled on 11 December 2021, 26 March 2022 and 25 June 2022. All the sessions will be run entirely in Japanese language.
