CPD workshop series for Japanese language teachers

Posted on 15 January 2021

New Japanese language education project in collaboration with the OJAE research and development team

Megumi Bailey, Associate Lecturer in Japanese, has been successfully awarded a grant from the Japan Foundation, London to develop and deliver the project ‘How can teachers in Japanese language education help learners to develop their communication competence?’.

For the key part of the project, the Department of Language and Linguistic Science will be launching a series of CPD workshops aimed at tutors of Japanese language. Participants will have the opportunity to gain familiarity with or deepen their knowledge of the Oral Japanese Assessment Europe (OJAE) method for assessing the language acquisition level and dialogue competence of Japanese learners.

What is OJAE?

It is a method to assess communication skills in Japanese language, developed by the OJAE research and development members of the European Institute for Japanese Language Education. It is fully compliant with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The aims of ‘How can teachers in Japanese language education help learners to develop their communication competence?’ are:

  • to enhance understanding and application of CEFR in Japanese teaching
  • to consider what ‘communication’ means in our life, and in CEFR specifically with its credo of plurilingualism & pluriculturalism in CEFR
  • to explore how teachers can assess the communication competence of learners and help them to develop it further through OJAE

In the CPD workshops, language tutors will be able to engage in discussions and reflections on how to help learners to develop their language competence further. This will be done within the context of nurturing collaborative learning using the OJAE approach, which is based on ‘dialogue’, ‘collaboration’ and ‘self-development’. The project will also see involvement and special support provided by the research team of OJAE.

"Language teachers at educational institutions are expected to assess and evaluate learners. What are we as teachers trying to assess in the speaking test? I am pleased to have the opportunity to discuss the methods that we as teachers use to nurture learners in developing their communication competence. For more than ten years the OJAE method has been researched and I am delighted to welcome the OJAE team to join us and help develop our understanding through workshop-style seminars." - Megumi Bailey, Dept. Language and Linguistic Science, University of York
