The module will explore the role of art within Italian society throughout history, from the middle Ages to the present day. Students will acquire knowledge of the history of Italian art, while reflecting on the centrality of its role in Italian culture. They will also gain a better understanding of recent government policies and of the intricate relations between Church and State in the conservation of cultural heritage.
Students must have successfully completed:
Two hours a week.
The medium of instruction is Italian. There will be a weekly lecture to introduce the context and key facts related to a particular aspect of the theme. This will be followed by 1 hour seminar devoted to the analysis of selected extracts of written and audio-visual materials in Italian through varying activities.
Bibliographical references will be supplied during the module. Consultation of Italian daily newspapers and weekly magazines is essential for the students to keep up to date with current issues in Italy.
