Aims

In this module you will learn the basics of Old English by analysing Old English data and comparing the grammars of Present Day English and Old English. You will learn to read, write and speak simple Old English.

By the end of this module, students will:

  • have developed an understanding of the grammar of Old English
  • have learned to analyse Old English in a linguistically informed way
  • be able to read, write and speak simple Old English

Students must have successfully completed:

  • E01C Understanding English Grammar

  • L11C Introduction to Syntax

Contact hours

A minimum of 24 contact hours, made up of lectures, seminars and practicals.

Teaching programme

The Spring Term will be devoted to discovering Old English grammar, and learning to read, write and speak Old English. The Summer Term will be devoted to a creative project which will put these skills to use. The project will involve some group work.

  • Exercises and quizzes with oral or written feedback as appropriate.
  • Participation in class activities with oral feedback.
