Developing a high performance assistant workforce

This project seeks to build upon the findings from two recently completed NIHR SDO studies on assistant roles in secondary healthcare: one by the University of Oxford on assistant roles at Agenda for Change pay bands 2 and 3 (SDO/155/2006); the other by the University of York on assistant practitioner roles at pay band 4 (SDO/159/2006). In combining the findings and the research teams from these studies an exciting and unique opportunity is provided to identify and explore further ways in which the full range of assistant roles can be more efficiently and effectively designed, used, and managed by acute trusts. This follow-up work is particularly timely as the National Health Service (NHS) enters a period of financial constraint and is likely to encourage an increasing focus on assistant roles as a means of addressing pressures on the cost and quality of healthcare provision.
