I have been to see the Merchant of Venice which is lovely to see  – absolute Venice Mr Irving not a bad Christian  Jew – perhaps you adore him tho' in which case I will write that I said to his arch (but by no means malicious) adorer Baroness Burdett Cootts - Perhaps if Shakespeare saw Mr Irving act the part he would re-write the play.
