Exploring science and technology on the shelves of your supermarket

Supermarket shelves are stocked with all kinds of products many of which depend on some seriously sexy science and technology! Even the simplest products provide convenient and fun ways to explore the science in the world around us. That's what we intend to do on this site: make suggestions about using food and other supermarket products to perform simple experiments in the comfort of your own home (the kitchen mostly!).

On our website, we provide instructions for a range of activities complete with explanations and safety notes. Simply follow them to have fun and learn something along the way. Our site is aimed at families with kids between 6 and 11 years old, though we hope that everyone will find something of interest. Many of the activities require adult supervision and this would be a good way to use our website too. To see our activities, follow the link or choose Activities from the menu.

Science on the Shelves is run from the Department of Chemistry at the University of York in the UK. If you want to find out more about us and our collaborators, follow the link or choose About us from the menu.

If you have any great ideas for groovy experiments with food and other stuff in your kitchen cupboards, or any other comments, please let us know by contacting Nigel Lowe at the University of York. To contact Nigel, follow the link or choose Contact us from the menu.
