  The York University Promotion Committee was established to prepare and present a case for a University of York and, subsequently, to plan the University and implement the initial stages of its establishment. This included providing properties and accommodation for the University and making the early appointments.

  The Academic Planning Board was responsible for selecting the first Vice-Chancellor, considering the subjects to be offered and general character of undergraduate courses, and the governance and constitution of the University.

  Meetings between the Vice-Chancellor and key members of academic and administrative staff concerning a range of planning issues were held in the run-up to the University's formal opening in 1963.
