Radical right-wing parties and Euroscepticism: issue salience in MEP speeches

Despite the fact that increasing numbers of radical right-wing politicians are elected to the European Parliament, we know little about the issues that they choose to promote in this parliamentary arena. The proposed research will evaluate the relationship between the Eurosceptic platforms of radical right-wing MEPs and their behaviour once elected in the EP. The research will do so by assessing issue salience in MEP speeches through the use of quantitative content analysis. This project builds on and extends the applicant’s previous research which has identified that radical right-wing party response to European integration depends on domestic party strategies.
