An inclusive community

A message from our Vice-Chancellor to staff and students

2 June 2020

Thank you for contacting me to express your outrage at the killing of George Floyd. I share this outrage.

Our University was founded on principles of social justice, shared purpose, and inclusion, and these values feel especially relevant in light of recent events.

So let me restate, without qualification, that all members of our community, including our black staff and students, have the right to a fair, welcoming and inclusive environment that is free from all forms of harassment and bullying. We remain committed to creating an environment which is safe, inclusive and welcoming for everyone.

I can assure you that our community, including our student unions and colleagues across the University, will never tire in calling out and condemning racism. We must ensure we continue to work hard to always challenge systemic inequalities, expose injustice and fight for fairness.

We will reiterate these messages to our community, as well as share our support and advice for anyone feeling angry, concerned or anxious. This includes our new Dignity at Work and Study policy, which provides guidance for anyone who experiences or witnesses any form of hate incident.

We will also share our new report and support tool, which has been specifically designed to offer help and advice to students who experience any form of harassment or hate incident.

We hope this tool, which brings together support from across the University, will also help us understand better the lived experiences impacting our University community, including our black staff and students. It will be vital in informing our proactive and preventative efforts in tackling this critical issue.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.

With all good wishes

Charlie
