Event details

John Snow was born in York in 1813.  His family lived in North Street and he was educated in Priory Street.  His work on cholera is world famous as it transformed public health by emphasising the importance of non-contaminated water supplies in preventing the spread of infectious disease.

This event will explore John Snow’s early life and connect it to ideas about life and death in early nineteenth-century England.  The event will begin with a talk and followed by a walking tour (weather permitting), identifying localities significant in John Snow’s life and ways in which the City of York tackled the growing problem of public health.
