Event details

Why did the chicken cross the globe? Due to human intervention! Therefore, we can learn a lot about human history through studying theirs. Archaeological sites from the Late Iron Age onwards are always uncovering chicken remains, but we still don’t know when chickens became food or how they were used in the past.

This event will show, using archaeology and other disciplines, the social, cultural and environmental impact of this important species. We will explore present day issues of poultry-borne diseases, food security and environmental ethics using evidence from ancient York. These are important issues for a society that relies on mass-produced chickens as a source of sustenance.
