Biography

Career

After graduating LL.B in Scots law with Honours in European Community Law from The University of Glasgow (1990-94), I completed the CPE and LPC at Staffordshire University (1994-1996). Following this, I completed the degree of LL.M in Commercial Law at The University of Birmingham (1996-97).

At that time I trained as a solicitor in Birmingham, qualifying as a Solicitor on 1st July 1999. I am no longer practising. 

My practice experience was mainly in civil litigation and dispute resolution, with firms based in The Midlands and the Channel Islands. 

During my time in both Bailiwicks of the Channel Islands, I completed the Jersey Advocates & Solicitors' examination in 2009. As a result, I was admitted as an Advocate of the Royal Court of Jersey in 2010. Subsequently, in Guernsey, I completed the Bar Examination in 2012, together with a further qualification from Caen University in France. I was admitted as an Advocate of the Royal Court of Guernsey in 2013, practising as such before leaving Guernsey in 2016. I am no longer an Advocate.

Before joining York Law School in September 2021, I taught on the Bar Practice Course at ULaw Birmingham during 2020-21. At York, my core focus is on teaching and facilitating learning, particularly through facilitating problem-based learning and legal skills sessions on the LL.B programme. 

In addition to my law qualifications, I also hold a postgraduate management qualification (PgCM) from the University of Northampton. I have also recently completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PgCAP) at the University of York.  In consequence of the latter, I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
