I am a PhD student at York Law School and the Centre for Applied Human Rights (CAHR). I have taught on several undergraduate modules at YLS including Foundations in Law for first and second year students; Introduction to Law & Society; Human Rights, Law, Power & Global Challenges.
Before returning to higher education to pursue a PhD, I worked for over a decade in the legal and charity sectors across areas of social welfare, human rights, immigration, and on access to justice projects. Alongside my role at YLS, I am a Research Leader in Citizenship and the Rule of Law at the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law. I am an Associate at CAHR, and a member of York Together, a local grassroots activist organisation.
My doctoral project is a socio-legal study of British women and children affiliated with the Islamic State, using both doctrinal and empirical methods. The questions posed within my research provoke a review of how justice and human rights can be applied in the complex counter-terrorism challenges of today’s world. My thesis supervisors are Professor Ioana Cismas and Dr Lawrence McNamara.
