Izzie Salter
Postgraduate Researcher
I first came to York Law School as an undergraduate in 2018. After completing an MA in Social Research at the University of Leeds, I returned to YLS in 2023 to undertake an ESRC-funded PhD at the Administrative Fairness Lab. My project is a socio-legal exploration of debt recovery as a function of Universal Credit, and perceptions of fair process within this.
Alongside my PhD, I have worked as a Research Assistant for a range of projects relating to social care, social security benefits, community-led housing policy, and artificial intelligence in public services. I am the current representative for the YLS PGR cohort.

My doctoral project is a socio-legal exploration of the processes which underpin "deductions" from Universal Credit, where the Department for Work and Pensions can recover certain debts recovered directly from an individual's monthly payment. The thesis is built upon a combination of doctrinal and empirical work, to understand (1) the way deductions decisions are made, and (2) the extent to which this shapes individuals' perceptions of fair treatment.
