Emma Wright
BA (Leeds), CPE (College of Law, Chester)
Solicitor (England & Wales) (non-practising)
Lecturer (Teaching & Scholarship) - Intellectual Property
I've had 20+ years' experience as an intellectual property and commercial lawyer, both in private practice and in industry, mainly in the life-sciences sector. My previous roles include being In-House Counsel for Smith & Nephew plc, a $1+bn global medical devices company. I was also Group In-House Counsel at an AIM listed SME, Avacta Group plc, advising its diagnostics, therapeutics and animal health businesses and contributing to the growth of the company from a £30million to a £250million market cap. I advised on complex multi-jurisdictional intellectual property licensing arrangements; research and development agreements; clinical trials for novel cancer therapeutics; new product development and manufacturing arrangements (including technology transfer arrangements); and brand exploitation in a highly regulated industry sector. My experience includes a 360 degree viewpoint gained from working with private and public companies, public bodies, charities (including a £50million international research collaboration funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), and academic institutions.
Whilst working in industry, I was on the Legal and Regulatory Committee for the Association of British Healthcare Industries (ABHI) (including on the ABHI Membership Code of Conduct Adjudication Panel) and on the Intellectual Property Advisory Committee for the BioIndustry Association (BIA).
In private practice I worked at Pinsents and Walker Morris in Leeds, where latterly I was Head of the Lifesciences and Pharmaceuticals Group.
My previous lecturing experience includes being a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Law, Leeds, teaching Business Law.
I read English (BA) as an undergraduate at the University of Leeds, followed by a law conversion under the Common Professional Examination (CPE - law conversion) and Legal Practice Course (LPC) at the College of Law, Chester.
With my background of intellectual property and commercial law in industry, this is an exceptional module that uses an interesting and complex case study based on a realistic scenario that will give you the skills that you will need to practice in this area.
