I have had interesting careers in law, medicine and teaching law at several universities.
I am a non-practising Solicitor and non-practising GP.
I worked as a solicitor for around ten years, first of all specialising in civil litigation and professional negligence claims, working at well-known commercial law firms in Leeds. I then moved to Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands, where I assisted the Law Officers (the Attorney General and the Solicitor General). This work included public international law and advising politicians on the legal implications of their policies for changes to laws.
Whilst living in Guernsey, I became Specsavers’ first in-house lawyer at the company’s head office on the island. This involved a wide variety of complex legal work. For example, lobbying for changes to the law regulating the online sale of contact lenses. Also, advising on employment contracts, infringement of intellectual property rights and commercial transactions.
After returning home to North Yorkshire, I decided to change my career to study medicine at Hull York Medical School (HYMS). I therefore have several years experience of problem based learning (PBL) as a student.
As a doctor, I specialised in general practice, working as a GP in North Yorkshire.
I then combined my experiences of law and medicine to work as a Medical Legal Consultant at a leading medical indemnity company (MPS), representing doctors facing professional difficulties. For example, claims by patients for medical negligence, complaints to the General Medical Council for professional misconduct and criminal prosecutions for gross negligence manslaughter.
I am a PBL tutor for Year 1 including LP&S.
