Legal Clinic for Clients

The Clinic offers a confidential and professional legal advice service. If you are offered an appointment, Student advisors, who are studying law at the University, will interview you and find out what your concerns are. They will then discuss your case, in confidence, with their supervisor to see if we can help you.

If we can, the students will look into your case and, after consulting with professionally qualified lawyers, advise you of your position and what you may be able to do. If we cannot assist you, you will be told as soon as possible with the reason why and we will try to refer you to other possible sources of help if you wish us to do so.

As a professionally supervised service, our Clinic provides much needed help to the public and a powerful learning opportunity for our students. We opened it with the aim of providing a free legal advice that would complement the legal service provision in the area.

We may not be able to assist in every case but if we can, we will. It is important to note that the Clinic provides written advice only. We are unable to take cases beyond this stage unless we specifically confirm, in writing, that we can.

“I had confidence in the students who advised me. They were very professional, patient, understanding and very committed.”

“The entire process was brilliant.”

“The advice was relevant, well-presented and extremely helpful.”

“I was kept well informed about progress, email updates with informative information of the times, procedures and progress. Even with problems due to signal strength of the internet we managed to get together in zoom meetings. I really was impressed with the dedication, diligence and professionalism of those who helped me. I would highly recommend the Law Clinic and all involved.”

The Clinic is a taught module for students studying at York Law School. It is taught during autumn and spring terms only, effectively between October to March. Unfortunately, we cannot take on cases between April and September.

The Legal Clinic is located in Market Square on Campus West, near to the Information Centre.
