The York Law Review
Welcome to the York Law Review (YLR), the only publication for legal writing by undergraduate and postgraduate students at York, edited and published by students.
The York Law Review is a student-led academic publication managed by students and staff at the York Law School (YLS). We publish legal scholarship written by YLS students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The York Law Review was established in the 2019/20 academic year and published its first volume in May 2020. Since then, we have published four volumes. Our latest volume, launched in June 2025, contains papers adapted from YLS dissertations from the 2024/25 cohort, as well as the winning papers from our annual competitions.
Publications
The York Law Review releases a new volume every summer. You can access the latest volume and all previous volumes online here.
We also print a limited number of copies of the latest volume. You can also find the journal on HeinOnline.
Student editorial team
The York Law Review is led and managed by a team of YLS students. The Student Editorial Team manages the day-to-day operations of the journal and is ultimately responsible for its content and production.
Editor-in-Chief - Eleana Kasoulide
Eleana is a PhD student at the York Law School researching the experimental stage of introducing new digital public services. She is also a research assistant for the Administrative Fairness Lab working on projects that aim to improve public service processes.
Senior Editor - Malak Farag
Liya is currently pursuing an MA Law (by Research) degree.
Senior Editor - Uijin Shin
Uijin is currently pursuing an LLM in International Corporate and Commercial Law.
Senior Editor - Youssef Aboud
Youssef is currently pursuing an LLM in International Human Rights Law and Practice.
Junior Editor - Roma Beke
Roma is a final year student pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.
Editorial Board
The York Law Review Editorial Board consists of student and staff members. The board is chaired by the Head of School, Professor Sue Westwood. The role of the board is to provide strategic direction to the student editors and ensure quality and continuity in the development of the journal.

Competitions
Every year, the York Law Review hosts an abstract competition for YLS students. The authors of the selected abstracts will be invited to develop their work into full articles that will be published in the next edition of the journal, subject to editorial review.
This year’s competition is open to University of York students from all departments, who are interested in writing about a law-related topic for the York Law Review.
We are interested in your reflections on:
- A development in an area of law that particularly interests you;
- Challenges currently affecting law students, such as those raised by the cost of living crisis;
- A reading or case in any course's syllabus that particularly resonates with you; or
- A movie or book review with a focus on a legal analysis of the issues.
To enter the competition, you need to submit a 250-word abstract (along with an unedited writing sample) by completing this form (you must be signed in to your academic email address to access this). Your submission must be original work, but it can be a piece of work you have already submitted as part of your studies.
The deadline for entries is 9am on 30 January 2026.
The winners will be notified by 14 February 2026, and they will be invited to send in their full drafts (2,500 to 3,000 words) by 14 March 2026. The articles will be published in Volume 7 of the York Law Review, subject to editorial review, and the winners will each receive a cash prize of £50 upon publication!
