On Friday 28 April 2023  the Department of Language and Linguistic Science hosted its annual Alumni Event ‘What can you do with a degree in Language and Linguistics? to showcase to current students the range of different career paths open to language and linguistics graduates.

For the event, LLS alumni Maria Harrison, Emily Robinson and Scott Wellington returned to York to share their experiences and to present how their degree helped them to shape their current career paths.

The Alumni Event 2023’s guest speakers were:

  • Maria Harrison (2019 BA French and Spanish with a year abroad), now a Social & Digital Marketing Manager at Momentum Worldwide
  • Emily Robinson (2017 BA French and Spanish with a year abroad), previously Digital Content Creator and now a Trainee Teacher
  • Scott Wellington (2012 BA English Language and Linguistics), previously a Speech Scientist at SpeakUnique and now a PhD researcher in Speech and Language Processing

On the day, UG and PG students representing a range of degrees and years of study came to listen and chat with our panel of invited speakers.

"It was a pleasure to return to the University of York's Department of Language and Linguistic Science and share my post-degree career experiences and advice to this year's student cohort. The students asked some excellent questions about post-degree preparations for entering into careers related to NLP and speech processing. On-the-day feedback from students was full of inspiration and aspirations, and I'm certain those students interested in applying their Linguistics knowledge towards careers in Data Science and machine learning will find great success; after all, a degree in Linguistics from the University of York readily equips them with an arsenal of specialist skills to easily stand out from the crowd!- Scott Wellington, LLS Alumni

Our annual alumni event is a real highlight of the year - it’s always great to invite some of our past students back and to hear about their career experiences and all the brilliant things they’ve gone on to achieve since graduating from our department, and this year was no different. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for our students to get some advice from people who were in their shoes not that long ago, and to hear about how the skills and knowledge they acquire as students of Language and Linguistic Science can translate into different careers paths” – Dr George Bailey, Lecturer in LLS and Careers and Employability Coordinator
