National Student Survey 2022

Posted on 8 July 2022

We’re delighted to have some of the happiest Language and Linguistics students in the UK.

The Department of Languages and Linguistics has been placed 1st out of the Russell Group universities included in the 2022 National Student Survey (NSS) for 'Overall Satisfaction' for the subject of French studies, with a score of 95%. The subject of English language also was placed highly, scoring the 3rd highest result of all Russell Group universities included in the survey for ‘Overall Satisfaction’.

The NSS is a nationwide survey of final-year students in higher and further education that encourages them to give honest feedback about a variety of aspects of their university experience, including their department and course. This helps prospective students to make informed choices and also influences real change in future students’ experiences, from institution-level to course-level.

Within the Russell Group, French studies and English language were placed highly in the following assessed areas.

French studies:

  • Organisation and management (1st)
  • Student voice (2nd)
  • Overall satisfaction (1st)

English language:

  • Assessment and feedback (2nd)
  • Academic support (3rd)
  • Learning resources (3rd)
  • Overall satisfaction (3rd)

Professor Monika Schmid, Head of Department

'It is very important to the department to get an insight into how students feel about their studies. Thank you very much to all those who have participated in the NSS, we really value your input. I am very happy to see that so many students have felt happy and well supported by our department, in particular since they did the bulk of their studies during the pandemic'.

York's overall position
