The return of the department colloquium series

Posted on 6 January 2021

The department’s regular series of research talks returned towards the end of term with three invited speakers

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science has hosted weekly research talks from invited speakers across the UK (and sometimes the globe!) for many years now. After taking a short break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a new research colloquium series was organised and hosted by Dr George Bailey (LLS Lecturer in Phonetics and Phonology) in the final three weeks of the Autumn Term 2020.

LLS Research Colloquium: talks and participating speakers:

  • Dr Evan Hazenberg (University of Sussex) on ‘Trans people and language variation:  Social and structural insights from sociolinguistics’
  • Dr Matthew Husband (University of Oxford) on ‘Stealing interpretations? Failed investigations into structural reanalysis’
  • Dr Helen Nuttall (Lancaster University) on ‘Sensorimotor integration during speech perception’

In response to the pandemic, for the very first time talks were held virtually and open to members of the public. This drew in large audiences and led to some interesting and lively discussion periods.

“It was great to end the term with three fascinating research talks covering a wide range of topics, and it was particularly nice to see such a great turnout for the events from staff, postgraduate students and also guests from other institutions who wouldn’t usually have been able to attend.” - Dr Geoge Bailey, Dept. Language and Linguistic Science, University of York

Details and registration links for forthcoming colloquium events will be released in the event page on our website. For further information please contact Dr George Bailey at george.bailey@york.ac.uk
