Talk at NTU workshop on forensic language analysis

Dom Watt was invited to give one of five guest presentations at a one-day workshop 'Language and Identity in Law and Evidence' organised by Nottingham Trent University, with the support of the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) and Routledge academic publishers.

His talk, entitled 'By his speech shall ye know him: Developments in the use of forensic voice comparison evidence by the UK courts', was followed by talks and practical sessions on topics ranging from authorship attribution and plagiarism detection to techniques that are used to train undercover police officers to mimic the online chat styles of children being 'groomed' by adults.

There were also presentations on biases evident in the language used by judges during the trials of female murderers, and the use of software tools to gather and analyse abusive messages posted by Twitter trolls.
