Academics in action

Posted on 15 October 2014

Staff and students were busy over the summer organising and presenting at conferences

The department hosted two conferences in September, the 2nd York
PARLAY (Postgraduate and Academic Researchers in Linguistics at York), organised by our PhD students, and the 29th Comparative Germanic Syntax Workshop, jointly organised by the Minimalist Syntax Group at our department and the Rethinking Comparative Syntax (ReCoS) project at the University of Cambridge. Both events were a great success!

‌Dom Watt and Anne Fabricius (Roskilde University, Denmark) co-organised a special panel session on new methods for the study of vocalic variation at the Methods in Dialectology XV conference hosted by the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.

A large delegation from York (our department and JP French Associates) attended the annual conference of the International Association for Forensic Phonetics and Acoustics in Zürich, Switzerland. Georgina Brown and Jessica Wormald won the prize for Best Student Paper for their presentation 'Speaker profiling: An automatic method?'.

Traci Walker and Richard Ogden attended the International Conference on Conversation Analysis at UCLA, participating in a special panel session "Phonetics and the management of talk-in-interaction: Methods, challenges, findings".
