Posted on 18 August 2010

One of only five Humanities Research Centre Doctoral Fellowships has been awarded to a third-year PhD student in Linguistics

We are delighted to announce that one of the five Humanities Research Centre Doctoral Fellowships has been awarded to Rein Ove Sikveland, a third-year PhD student in Linguistics and a Fellow within Sound to Sense, the Marie Curie Research Training Network. The judges for the final round of the Fellowship competition comprised a panel of academics, chaired by Jane Moody, the Director of the Humanities Research Centre. They were joined by Ken Dixon, formerly Chair of the University Council.

"Rein’s project opens up new ways of conceptualizing turn construction in Norwegian face-to-face interaction", Professor Moody commented, "The judges were impressed by the arguments Rein made about the collaborative achievement of meaning in conversation and his intelligent use of a single powerful example to illustrate his research questions in action. They were also pleased to note the leadership roles he has taken within Sound to Sense, and the substantial number of presentations he has already given at international conferences."
