PhD Studentship - The experiences of fathers of children with a life limiting condition

More children and young people are now living with medical conditions that may ultimately shorten their life (life-limiting conditions) and cause death in childhood or young adulthood.

Parents of children diagnosed with a life-limiting condition (LLC) commonly co-ordinate all of their child’s care needs. Services for these children within the NHS and the statutory services rarely provide support for the parents or other family members.

It has been acknowledged that fathers’ experiences of their child having a LLC have often been overlooked meaning that their unique perspectives and individual support needs are not well understood. Furthermore, studies that look at ‘parental experiences’ do not commonly differentiate between the views of mothers and fathers making it difficult to conclude whether they would benefit from the same types of support.

This research will explore the experiences, perspectives and wellbeing of fathers of children with a LLC. To obtain a clear picture of what is already about these fathers, and to inform the next phase of the project, published research will first be reviewed in a systematic way. It is envisaged that this will identify the nature of any specific challenges faced by fathers as well as what else needs to be understood in order to inform the best support provision for this under-researched group.
