Matthew has worked in higher education for most of his career, following an early background in Social Work. He has held roles at Northumbria, Newcastle, and Teesside universities, leading key areas such as student recruitment, student experience, practice placements, funding (NHS bursaries, scholarships, studentships), and student records management (registration and progression), across the professional areas of Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Clinical Psychology, Social Work and Allied Health Professions. Matthew also served as Medical Education Lead at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Trust for Medical Students and F1 and F2 Resident Doctors.
Now based in the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York, Matthew provides Operational Leadership to a team of 17 staff across three Student Services functions: Student and Applicant Experience, Academic Programmes and Placements and Educational Technology. Matthew is also the Department's Safeguarding Lead and is one of the University's Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads (DDSL).
