Biography

Karen joined York Trials Unit in 2020 as a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) and Stakeholder Engagement Manager. She previously worked as an independent communications consultant for a wide variety of clients in the public and private sector. Karen started her career in the Netherlands, where she was employed as a senior communications and media relations officer by local councils and the Dutch pension fund APG.

  • CASCADE - Case finding for depression in primary care: a regression discontinuity design
  • DIDACT - Multi-centre randomised controlled trial to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of surgery compared with sling immobilisation in the management of adults with radiological diagnosis of a displaced fracture of the distal clavicle that does not involve the acromioclavicular joint.
  • EXTEND - An RCT determining the effectiveness of longer antibiotic courses in improving intra-abdominal infection patient outcomes
  • TIDE - An RCT investigating whether there are effective alternatives to nasal mupirocin for early decolonisation of MRSA amongst adult hospital in-patients
