University of York to host BAAL Annual Conference in August 2023

Posted on 3 October 2022

The University of York will host the British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL) Annual Conference from 23 to 25 August 2023.

The theme of this year’s BAAL conference will be “Opening Up Applied Linguistics”. With this in mind, we aim to celebrate existing open research initiatives, represent a broader range of areas within applied linguistics, including but not limited to decolonizing language learning and teaching and language use in the digital age, and to create an accessible and inclusive conference environment.

Key-note speakers Prof. Alison Phipps (University of Glasgow), Dr Ibrar Bhatt (Queen’s University Belfast), Dr Meng Liu (University of Cambridge), Dr Cylcia Bolibaugh (University of York) and Prof. Emma Marsden (University of York) will be joining us, along with researchers from the UK and around the world, to speak to the theme.

The Pit Corder lecture, traditionally on a theme associated with language teaching and learning, will be delivered by Prof. Glenn Stockwell (Waseda University, Japan) and explore the use of technology in language learning and teaching.

The Department of Education and the Centre for Research in Language Learning and Use (CRELLU) are delighted to have been chosen to host this year’s event, which provides an opportunity to highlight their work opening up the discipline through the IRIS (Instruments for Research into Second Languages), OASIS (Open Accessible Summaries in Language Studies), and EROS (Education Researchers for Open Science) initiatives. The Department of Education at the University of York is also home to the National Centre for Excellence in Language Pedagogy (NCELP).

The call for participation is now open. Further information can also be found on the BAAL Conference 2023 website.

We look forward to welcoming you to York in 2023!
