PhD students, Caroline Casey (PhD Education), and Michelle Hunter (PhD Applied Linguistics) have been shortlisted to exhibit their research as part of YorkTalks, a key University research showcase event, as part of this years PhD Spotlight competition.

YorkTalks 2019 takes place on Wednesday 9 January 2019 in the Ron Cooke Hub, Heslington East, University of York, where nine students will present their projects to an expected audience of 700 people.

Caroline Casey, a third year PhD student supervised by Professor Paul Wakeling, will present her research on 'University or Degree Apprenticeship - A Moral Choice?'. Her research concerns higher education and degree apprenticeships, with a particular interest in issues of inequality, access and choice, focusing on differential expierences based on class background in the legal profession. Caroline's research is largely qualitative and draws on theories from sociology of education, the professions, and human development as prisms for her work.

Michelle Hunter, a first year PhD student supervised by Dr Ursula Lanvers, will present her research on 'It's All Greek to Me! (Or Might As Well Be)'. Her research aims to find out what learning / teaching strategies could help deal with emotional and self-confidence issues in university classrooms. Michelle is a teacher of English as a foreign language with 20 years experience, based in Germany. She has seen first hand how both students and teachers struggle to maintain quality learning / teaching when working in a foreign language.
