Dutiful, disruptive or dangerous dissent? Young people's responses to environmental protest

Wednesday 27 January 2021, 1.00PM to 2.00pm

Speaker(s): Dr Lynda Dunlop, Dr Lucy Atkinson and Dr Maria Turkenburg-van Diepen, University of York Science Education Group

How should young people respond when policy-makers ignore their desires?  This seminar reports on youth representations of environmental protest in two locations (Lancashire in England and Co. Fermanagh in Northern Ireland) where protests have resulted from political responses to applications to extract natural gas using hydraulic fracturing.  We will share young people's representations of anti-fracking protest as ineffective, divisive and extreme and discuss the implications for education.
