PERC Seminar: Evidence-based approaches to behavioural problems in school

Wednesday 19 February 2020, 12.00AM to 1.00pm

Speaker(s): Dr Alice Jones Bartoli, Goldsmiths, University of London

The DfE's 2018 report on mental health and behaviour makes clear that the links between challenging behaviour and mental health should be considered carefully by schools. It is still the case that those students with SEND and mental health needs are still most likely to be excluded from school. Our work focuses on those children at greatest risk of academic and social exclusion. We work with schools to understand the profile of students most likely to be excluded, and create a school ethos that allows students to build relationships and skills. I will present some of this work, alongside some new work relating to the development of a public health approach to violence reduction - thinking about the potential role for schools, and the challenges for fully integrating schools into the model.
