Literary Translation workshops with children: Theory and Practice

Wednesday 28 November 2018, 12.00PM to -1.00pm

Speaker(s): Dr Clementine Beauvais, Centre for Research in Education and Social Justice

In this talk, I will present, and attempt to theorise, literary translation workshops with children. Such workshops are a relatively recent invention, led by charities such as Translators in Schools and Shadow Heroes, and also practiced by independent translators in primary and secondary schools as well as at university level. The practice, which has been extremely little studied for now, sits at the intersection of language teaching, literary analysis and creative writing. My research revolves around, principally, the kind of literary and metalinguistic skills that they may help children and young adults develop, and uses a method and theoretical framework receptive to the complexity of those phenomena. In this particular talk I will speak mostly of the theoretical contribution of translation theory to their analysis.
