Fiorella Ciapessoni is a PhD candidate who joined the Centre for Housing Policy in 2015. She was awarded an Overseas Research Scholarship from the University of York.
Fiorella is from Uruguay and throughout her academic education she has been dedicated to the problem of homelessness and housing exclusion in Montevideo. Under the supervision of Lisa O’Malley and Nicholas Pleace her PhD thesis aims to develop a deeper understanding of the links between homelessness, offending, experiences of incarceration and processes of ex-offender resettlement in Uruguay. The overall objective is to contribute to empirical and theoretical understanding of the link between offending and homelessness and to help develop practical solutions to this social problem. At a broader level, the thesis also seeks to explore the roles of housing policies in the successful reintegration of offenders to community.
As an assistant researcher and assistant professor in the Sociology Department of the Faculty of Social Sciences (Universidad de la República) in Montevideo, she has been teaching various courses (Qualitative methods, Social Theory) since 2009. She also took her MA and undergraduate degree in Sociology at this University.
Her main research interests include homelessness, housing trajectories, role of housing policies, social policy, crime and resettlement policies for offenders. As well as these subjects, she has been participating in the area of 'Sociology of Work' at the Sociology Department since 2009. In 2013- 2014 Fiorella worked as a consultant for the Ministry of Social Development conducting research in Montevideo about homelessness from a gender perspective and direct care work.
