Solvent Selection and Substitution: Online CPD course

Online CPD Course - maintain performance while using benign solvents.

This course is designed for people within the chemical (and related) industries as well as academics and students with an interest in solvent replacement strategies.

The aim of this course is to identify and understand the properties of solvents, and to approach solvent substitution in a systematic way that allows performance to be maintained with benign solvents.

Benefits

The replacement of hazardous solvents has received much attention in the past two decades. High volumes of solvent use in industry as well as in consumer products have magnified concerns over toxicity, safety, and environmental impact. In attempts to eliminate undesirable solvents, replacement strategies often seek structurally related compounds not yet covered by the legislative and regulatory measures usually required to force action in this respect. It is important to emphasise that historically these measures have proven to be short-sighted with respect to increasingly strict chemical controls worldwide. The unfortunate consequences of solvent use are often linked to the beneficial attributes of the solvent, and this makes substitution more challenging than might be expected.

This online course will facilitate sustainable solvent substitution by providing an understanding of:

  • The context for green and sustainable solvents;
  • Solvents properties and the role they play in modern chemistry;
  • The application of tools and methodologies for solvent substitution.

After completing the course, participants can expect to be able to identify green solvents, and make rational solvent substitutions for the improved environmental health and safety of their products and processes.

Content

The course will cover the following areas:

  • Solvent types, applications and properties;
  • Regulation;
  • Life cycle impact of solvents;
  • Characteristics of a green solvent;
  • Interpretation of solvent selection guides and their advantages and limitations;
  • Solvent substitutes for undesirable solvents;
  • Establishment of solvent performance criteria;
  • Bespoke solvent design.

The course will consist of an interactive blend of written material and videos.  The content will be supported by self-assessment exercises in the form of both multiple-choice and more in depth questions to test understanding and to apply knowledge to a number of different scenarios/case studies.
