Federica Angeli joined the School for Business and Society as Professor in Management in September 2019. Prior to that, she was Philip Eijlander Associate Professor in Global Management of Social Issues at the Department of Organization Studies at Tilburg University. Federica also held positions at Maastricht University (Care and Public Health Research Institute) and at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore.
Federica graduated from the University of Bologna, where she obtained a BSc and an MSc in Industrial Engineering (summa cum laude) and a PhD in Management in 2009. Her research focuses on organisational adaptation and learning to address complex societal issues, with a particular focus on inclusive healthcare delivery, poverty alleviation and societal resilience.
Federica is a member of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacturing and Commerce, of the Academy of Management (Healthcare Management Division, Social Issues in Management Division) and of the European Group of Organization Studies (EGOS). She also serves as Academic Editor for PLOS One. Since 2015, she has co-convened a conference sub-track at the EGOS yearly Colloquium, to reflect on contemporary challenges facing healthcare organizations.
Director of Research
Federica’s research investigates how organisations design innovative practices and balance multiple objectives to address complex societal challenges, in particular equitable healthcare delivery and poverty alleviation. With a multidisciplinary, multi-method approach she has for example examined entrepreneurship dynamics in the healthcare sector, the effects of a multi-strategy healthcare reform in India on the reduction of health inequities; the challenges of healthcare delivery in resource-constrained settings, from a business model point of view, and from the perspective of healthcare professionals and disadvantaged communities; the sensemaking and learning challenges facing policymakers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her current research is looking to apply complexity-driven, socio-ecological approaches to understanding organisational learning in view of development and humanitarian challenges. Within this endeavour, her new book on “Organizing for Sustainable Development: Addressing the Grand Challenges” (co-authored with Jörg Raab and Ashley Metz - Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group) is upcoming in 2021. Federica’s research has examined (often comparatively) several geographical settings, including Italy, the Netherlands, India, the United States, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda.
Federica work has been recognised with several awards, among others by the Academy of Management (Healthcare Management Division and International Management Division), by the Strategic Management Society, and the Academy of International Business. Her articles have appeared in leading academic journal in the management, social science, and health policy field, such as Social Science and Medicine, PLOS One, Health Policy, Health Policy and Planning, Regional Studies, Health Services Research, Organization & Environment, and Long Range Planning.
Federica serves as Academic Editor of PLOS One and she is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.
Federica is currently supervising several doctoral students, who work on their PhD project both full-time and part-time, from various locations in the world. Doctoral projects that are either ongoing or have been recently completed address for example social entrepreneurship in Sub-Saharan African education sector; organizational learning from performance feedback among Dutch secondary schools; multi-stakeholder partnerships for sustainable tourism in Ethiopia; cross-sector collaborations supporting social entrepreneurship and impact investing in the forestry sector.
Federica is accepting new doctoral students on topics of organisational learning, complexity and socio-ecological views related to global challenges, such as poverty alleviation, (health) system resilience, and equitable healthcare delivery.

Federica has designed and taught a variety of modules in the field of healthcare management and management for social issues, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Her courses have covered topics such as hybrid organizations, interventions theories and tools for wicked problems, strategic management, leadership and organizational change in healthcare, research methods, global health management. At Tilburg University, she led the design and acted as Academic Director of the Masters specialisation in Global Management of Social Issues. While at Maastricht University, she was Deputy Director of the Masters in Health Policy, Innovation and Management. She holds a University Teaching Qualification from Maastricht University, where she also obtained a qualification for problem-based learning teaching.
