These statistics relate to the HESA standard registration student population, student admission and current student attainment and are updated annually.

Admissions and attainment statistics

We are required by the independent regulator of higher education in England, the Office for Students, to publish the following ‘transparency return’ dataset.

About the data

Student headcount is based on the HESA standard registration population. It includes all students who are registered and are active during the academic year (1 August to 31 July) on a course leading to a qualification or credit. For more information on definitions please see the HESA website.

To be included, a student must:

  • Be active: Students must have progressed at least two weeks into their current year of study.
  • Study in the UK: This includes distance learners based in the UK and students on industrial placements or study years abroad.
  • Be "Registered": It includes students registered at the provider even if they are taught elsewhere through a franchise or collaborative agreement.

Students are excluded if they are:

  • Dormant for the entire cycle
  • Intercalating out to another provider for the entire cycle
  • An incoming visiting and exchange student
  • A postdoctoral student
  • Primarily studying outside the United Kingdom (UK)
  • On a programme of study outside of the UK.
