Learn to share, build and evaluate professional practice and educational policy. 

Designed for teachers currently working in schools and other educational settings, this course will enhance your understanding of educational practice. 

Building on the skills you developed during your PGCE, you'll explore complex policy, pedagogical practice and educational research. You'll reflect on leadership and change management and engage critically with educational research to inform your own developing practice. 

Studying for this Masters should support you in further developing your career.

Course content

The modules in this course are designed to complement the work you completed as part of your PGCE, and build on the professional experience and expertise you've gained in your work as a teacher. 

You'll explore theories of leadership in education, getting to grips with the challenges of change management. 

You'll also develop a core set of research skills, considering research design, methodologies, ethical issues and think about the importance of using educational research to improve your practice. 

In Year 2 you'll complete an Independent Professional Study, giving you the chance to explore a topic that's important to you and allowing you to apply the skills you've learned directly to your professional practice. 


In Year 1, you'll complete three core modules.

Research project

You'll spend Year 2 working on an Independent Professional Study that will empower you to reflect academically and professionally on an issue or area that is pertinent to your own professional development.

Students who complete this course will be able to:

  • Critically appraise, evaluate and synthesise complex information from diverse knowledge bases, literatures, perspectives and contexts to inform discussion of policy and development of practice
  • Evaluate approaches to teaching and learning and develop professional practice by engaging critically with theoretical frameworks and concepts
  • Present well-evidenced educational arguments by collating, managing and critically analysing empirical data using appropriate digital tools
  • Communicate complex information and arguments clearly, confidently and in a professional manner, making use of oral, written and visual formats
  • Devise and lead strategic teaching and learning initiatives by applying in-depth knowledge of theories, principles, methodologies and approaches to the management of education contexts
  • Initiate and conduct independent, focussed research projects by engaging in thorough planning, rigorous ethics procedures and the selection and application of appropriate principles, methodologies and approaches

Students on a Student Visa (formerly Tier 4 Visa) are not currently permitted to study part-time at York.

For courses which are longer than one year, the tuition fees quoted are for the first year of study. Fees for subsequent years are subject to increase (no more than 2% each year).

Impact of coronavirus (COVID-19)

We hope to deliver this course as advertised for 2021/22 entry, but it’s unclear when we’ll be able to return to a normal timetable. For an idea of how this course might be affected, see our changes for 2020/21 entry.

Teaching format

This course is a part-time blended learning programme that enables you to continue to work in an educational setting while you’re studying.


You'll take part in a number of workshops, seminars and interactive lectures held on campus on Saturdays. 

You'll complete a lot of your learning online, using the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to access online lectures, videos and reading assignments. 

We're a supportive and friendly department, and you'll be assigned a supervisor to help you progress through your course. When you're not on campus, you'll be able to contact your tutors through the VLE and email. 

Teaching location

The Department of Education is based in Derwent College on Campus West. 

We have designed this course so that you're only expected to come onto campus outside of your normal working hours. Outside of timetabled classes, you'll be able to access everything you need online.

About our campus

Our beautiful green campus offers a student-friendly setting in which to live and study, within easy reach of the action in the city centre. It's easy to get around campus - everything is within walking or pedalling distance, or you can always use the fast and frequent bus service.

Assessment and feedback

You'll complete a range of assessments including essays and a dissertation. 

You'll also complete a number of formative assessments, including presentations, group tasks and contributions to blogs and discussion boards. These assessments do not count towards your degree, but they will help you to understand how you're progressing and give you an opportunity to receive feedback on your work.

Postgraduate degree PGCE with 60 credits at Masters Level (Level 7)
Other international qualifications Equivalent qualifications from your country

Additional requirements

You need to show that you have 1 year of professional experience after having completed your PGCE. You also need to provide a reference from your senior management team to prove that you are currently working in a school or educational setting.

English language

If English isn't your first language you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. We accept the following qualifications:

You may be eligible for one of our pre-sessional English language courses. These courses will provide you with the level of English needed to meet the conditions of your offer.

The length of course you need to take depends on your current English language test scores and how much you need to improve to reach our English language requirements.
