Staff in the Building Research and Innovation Capacity Team, work with academic and professional support staff to deliver a wide range of training for all those engaged in, and who support, research at the University.
The University of York has recently redefined its professional development training for researchers to support research excellence, a strategic priority of the University plan. York commits to creating a rich environment in which PG Research students, early career researchers and academic staff can thrive, develop their professional and personal skills and produce excellent research. They do this in collaboration with leading academics, private, public and third sector stakeholders. To ensure collaboration and representation a new postdoc liaison officer post has been created to connect the growing number of postdoc fora and support grass-roots activity. York has held the HR Excellence in Research Award for six years and has been commended on its pilot cross-institutional mentoring programme and Research Leaders programme, which aims to improve the take-up of professional development activities among PIs (for which it won the Times Higher Education Award for Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers 2013). York held its first ‘Falling Walls’ competition in 2017. ECRs from all faculties took part in themed heats aligned to the University’s research themes. Two winners will vie for the title of ‘Young Innovator of the Year’ award at the Berlin final in November 2017.
Alongside this training provision a range of events and fora are held for staff to network and develop interdisciplinary research ideas.
