No more Heroes? Using the History of Science in the Classroom.

Friday 4 November 2016, 5.00PM to 6.15pm

Speaker(s): Dr Sabine Clarke, University of York Department of History.

This session seeks to move beyond the use of history to present learners with heroic 'eureka' moments in science and consider alternative ways to deploy history to foster engagement and understanding. This includes the use of history to  expand understanding of the diversity of people and roles involved in scientific endeavour, the idea of science as a collective project, and the issue of how we refer to a past in which scientists embraced ideas and understandings that we now consider to be wrong. What vision of longer term scientific progress should we present to learners?
