A day in the life of a Principal Architect in India

Self employed, running successful architectural consultancy in India

My career goals when I graduated

To start off on my own.

My career history

I graduated from architecture school in 2010 - Joined a Architectural firm that specialised in Earth construction for 2 years. Then moved to a Heritage consulting firm INTACH for 1 year. Joined the masters program at York. Came back and established my company.

What has helped my career to progress

Long nights during architecture school trained me for tough days as a business owner.
Also the credit of being from a well-known University like York and its archaeology department opens doors for you in terms of opportunity.

Courses taken since graduation

None

Where I hope to be in 5 years

A more well established firm with more Heritage related projects.

My advice to students considering work

Work hard and be patient. Follow your passion and success will follow, although a bit slowly.....

My advice about working in my industry

Be observant - always carry a notebook to jot down ideas that come to you.

Contacting me

You can contact me regarding anything architecture related - will be more than happy to help

What I do

I run my architectural consultancy in Bangalore, India. We deal with turn key architectural projects. We also consult on and run workshops related to Heritage.

How I started my business

After graduating from York in 2013, I started this business with a friend of mine, we had 2 projects to begin with and there was no looking back from there. It was not easy to establish the firm. It took a lot of hard work, networking, late nights and a dash of luck to keep it going. It has been two years and now we have over 10 projects ranging from eco-friendly resorts, farm houses, house renovations etc.

Skills I use and how I developed them

As an architect, we need to be well aware of everything related to the construction industry. Right from technical details to creating fresh designs with strong concepts. As far as software knowledge goes, we use on a daily basis AutoCAD, Photoshop and Google Sketchup

What I like most

The rush you feel when you see your designs materialise.

What I like least

The fact that I barely get time to be an architect - most of my time goes in site visits, client meetings, budgeting, strategic planning, people management etc etc.

What surprised me most

The time, effort, perseverance and patience it takes to run a business.
