My advice about working in my industry

Be prepared to invest a lot of your own time, money and energy into your training, but you should value your contribution from the outset, even as an 'unskilled labourer' or trainee. Never work for someone else for less than a fair day's wage - It literally doesn't pay to do so!

Skills I use and how I developed them

All the techniques of traditional stained glass design manufacture (designing, drafting, glass selection and cutting, painting and firing glass, glazing in lead, cementing, fixing etc.)- learned in practice and developed via project experience.
Conservation skills - research and investigation, material analysis and condition reporting, recommendations and method statements, remedial and repair skills. Developed through training, in practice and CPD.

What I like most

The hands on work with traditional materials, and seeing the inspiring work of previous generations of glass artist and craftspeople.

What I like least

Neglect, vandalism and underappreciation of stained glass, and chronic underfunding to maintain historic stained glass and leaded light schemes in the UK.
